Information Lifecycle Management (ILM)

What is ILM?

ILM - The process of managing information growth, storage, and retrieval over time, based on its value to the organisation.

Applications like email, web services and data warehousing, and data types such as email attachments, electronic documents and rich media are driving the storage of massive amounts of information. Moreover, the hypercritical nature of this stored data has never been higher because electronic data is now integral to most workflow processes and corporate communication.

As IT budgets and headcount remain relatively flat, organisations are faced with the dual challenge of optimising their storage infrastructure and meeting the increasingly stringent business requirements placed on stored information.

Email Management and Archiving

The use of electronic email has grown rapidly over the past 5 years and it is fast becoming the number one consumer of storage capacity within any network, from the Smallest through to largest Enterprise Corporation.

Due to the time dependant nature of emails they are natural candidates for the application of ILM.  Veritas Enterprise Vault - Email Archiving provides a feature rich approach to email ILM and archiving and supports Exchange, Notes and Microsoft SharePoint environments.  Gartner, in its 2006 Magic Quadrant review, puts Enterprise Vault as the clear leader in this market sector.

File Management and Archiving

Historically it was straight file archiving that initiated the design and development of ILM style applications.  As a compliment to Enterprise Vault - Email Archiving, Veritas have also developed Veritas Enterprise Vault - File Archiving.  This provides a similar interface to the email archiving product and so simplifies installation and reduces support and maintenance overheads.
